Consultancy
beyond... engages in a diverse consultancy projects that are focused at local, regional, state or national levels. This work ranges from consultation through to evaluation, needs assessment, organisational and service reviews, policy development, research, strategic planning, facilitation and program design. Projects often involve coordinating and managing beyond... staff or sub-contractors as part of a team.

Consultation
2010
National Summary Report of the COAG Expansion Jurisdictional Workshops 2010: National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO). Analyse all jurisdictional workshops where the ACCH sector was consulted on the recommended approach to a national orientation package for the proposed health workforce in their respective jurisdictions, and write an integrated report on the outcomes and decisions for the national orientation package.2005
Indigenous Health Research Scoping Study: Aboriginal Health Council of SA. Lead on this project, including a statewide consultation stage with Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff, researchers and academics working in the area of Indigenous health research.
Evaluation and needs assessment
2009 – 2011Secondary Mentoring Program Evaluation: Department of Education and Children's' Services. Undertake and report on this two year evaluation of this statewide mentoring program, in partnership with Haydyn Bromley and Nicole Keller.2009
An orientation, education and training needs analysis for the new and existing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health RTO National Network (ATSIHRTONN). Design, implement and report on this needs analysis in collaboration with ATSIHRTONN and in partnership with Jason Bromley and Darrien Bromley.2008 - 2010
New Arrivals Program (NAP) Targeted Interventions Program Evaluation and Mentoring: Department of Education and Children's' Services. Work with the ESL Programs Unit staff to develop program logics and evaluation plans, co-facilitate evaluation workshops with NAP Centre staff, and undertake an overall evaluation of the NAP Targeted Interventions Program with support from Nicole Keller.2008 - 2009
South Australian Aboriginal Health Partnership (SAAHP) 3rd Framework Agreement: Aboriginal Health Division, Department of Health. Develop, implement and report on the external evaluation of SAAHP's progress at the mid-way point of its 3rd Framework Agreement in partnership with Jason Bromley and Nicole Keller.2006 - 2007
School Retention Reference: Social Inclusion Unit, Department of Premier and Cabinet. Evaluate the purpose, nature, extent, benefits and impact of partnerships with community organisations that are involved in supporting School Retention Action Plan funded initiatives to determine how they contribute to school retention.
Organisational and service reviews
2008 - 2010Strengthening an organisational focus on Aboriginal cultural respect: Hunter New England Health Service. In partnership with Sharon Gollan, advise on the role, focus and operation of a Cultural Respect Committee within this government health service. This includes development and execution of an implementation plan, and advice on addressing priority areas and issues.2007
Leadership in Aboriginal health and wellbeing review: Aboriginal Health Council of SA. In partnership with Jason Bromley, map the relationship between the 'Aboriginal Health Sector Statewide Strategic Plan: 2004 - 2009' with the South Australian Strategic Plan 2007, and identify the areas in which AHCSA has demonstrated leadership in working toward desired outcomes for Aboriginal health and wellbeing. NACCHO Cultural Safety Training Standards: National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO). Support NACCHO in defining, establishing and promoting a set of standards by which cultural safety training can be assessed and accredited, with information available on a searching inventory within the NACCHO portal.2006
Learner Wellbeing Project: Department of Education and Children's' Services. Undertake and report on an external analysis of the feedback received on the 'Wellbeing is central to learning' Working Paper, and advise the Department in developing the next steps for the project and policy framework.2005 - 2006
Aboriginal Health Policy: Aboriginal Health Council of SA. In partnership with AHCSA develop an Aboriginal Health Policy that reflects the beliefs and commitments of the Aboriginal community controlled health sector.
Project management
2008 - 2011Quality Improvement and Accreditation Facilitators: OATSIH, Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. Coordinate and manage the work of a three-member team in supporting several ACCHOs in planning and preparing to undertake accreditation, liaison with state and national peak bodies, and liaison and regular reporting to OATSIH (also see 'Evaluation').2005 – 2008
Evaluation of the SNAICC Resource Service: Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care Inc (SNAICC). Design, coordinate and manage the evaluation of this new national service with SNAICC; the evaluation was undertaken in partnership with Sharon Gollan.2005 – 2006
Suicide Prevention for Country SA: Country Division, Department of Health and the Social Inclusion Board, Department of Premier & Cabinet. Provide support and mentoring to the Department in the project management of this initiative that includes a focus on young Indigenous people, as well as provide mentoring, advice and evaluation guidance for each of the seven rural health regions on a negotiated basis.
Research
2008 – 2009Accreditation Scoping Study: Aboriginal Health Council of SA. In partnership with Jason Bromley and Eunice Aston, design, undertake and report on a research study focused on the accreditation status, understanding, thinking, plans and self-assessment of Aboriginal community controlled health services in South Australia.2005 - 2006
Increasing Vocational Learning Opportunities for Indigenous Youth in Juvenile Detention: Youth Education Centre at Magill Training Centre, Department of Education and Children's Services. In partnership with Sharon Gollan, Natalie Harkin and Tangi Steen of The Unaipon School, UniSA, review relevant literature, train relevant staff in juvenile detention centres in undertaking research, support the research activities, analyse and report all outcomes about the educational experiences of young Aboriginal people in juvenile detention centres and write a report identifying directions for future action and research on this topic.2004 - 2005
Indigenous Health Research Scoping Study: Aboriginal Health Council of SA. Lead this project for AHCSA and mentor an Indigenous research assistant to determine the issues related to Indigenous health research, identify research capability in South Australia, and establish clear priority areas for making informed policy, research and funding decisions to better support, target and coordinate Indigenous health research.
Strategic planning, facilitation and program design
2010 - 2011Ear and Hearing Training for the Aboriginal Health Worker Workforce: National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO). Support NACCHO, to coordinate the development and piloting of training in using ear health assessment equipment, and national accredited training in ear health and hearing. This will involve a series of national meetings, workshops and symposiums for the ACCH sector and key stakeholders, designing and supporting implementation of an evaluation process, and project reporting.2010
Strategic planning for 2010-2015: Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council of NSW. Work with the AH&MRC leadership to create a five-year plan that guides their focus and activities on behalf of the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health sector in NSW.2008
Strategic planning for the State Aboriginal Heritage Committee: Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation, Department of Premier & Cabinet. In partnership with Jason Bromley, work with State Aboriginal Heritage Committee members and Secretariat staff plan to create a three-year plan that guides the focus and activities of the Committee.2008
Program planning for the 'Aboriginal Program and Policy Team (APPT)': Life Without Barriers. In partnership with Sharon Gollan, work with APPT staff to finalise a program position paper for this pilot project within Life Without Barriers for South Australia, and assist in writing funding proposals to support program activities.2007

Training
Kathleen has a long history in training and teaching that predates the establishment of beyond... This previous and company-based work includes:
- custom-designed training programs for local, regional, state, national or international groups,
- tertiary level curriculum development within universities, and vocational education and training (VET)
- training packages or short courses involving a series of training sessions, some of which are accredited through professional continuing education programs.

Challenging racism and developing culturally respectful service responses in working with Aboriginal people: Deliver 2-day workshops and 1-day follow-up workshops in partnership with Sharon Gollan for a broad range of health and human service agencies (Government and non-Government) in urban, rural and interstate locations.
Training packages and workforce development
2008 - 2010Cultural Respect training strategy for an Area Health Service: Hunter and New England Health, NSW Health. In partnership with Sharon Gollan, provide design and development advice on creating a strategy to address the diverse needs for the entire staff of a large area health service, as well as mentoring and training of in-house workshop facilitators who undertake local training.2007 – 2008

Stepping into Health Promotion: Chiropractors in School Communities Program: Chiropractors' Association of Australia. Coordinate, conduct and evaluate this training program for chiropractors who become program team members in the Healthy Spines National Health Promotion Program.

2002Aboriginal Narrative Therapy Project: SA Regional Centre for Indigenous Social-Emotional Wellbeing. Write the NARRA5A "Identify and understand practices and effects power: Culture and language of power" topic for the Diploma in Narrative Approaches for Aboriginal People, including the learning materials and session plans. Co-write the NARRA3A "Understand and utilize historical knowledge: Pre-colonisation and identity" topic for the same Diploma.2001 - 2002

Therapy
While the majority of Kathleen's work at beyond...is focused on consultancy and training, hse maintains a small private therapy practice. She has developed strong skills in working therapeutically with issues of abuse, trauma, grief, depression, suicide, eating problems and the effects of long-term health problems. In addition to teaching family therapy and narrative therapy in previous public sector and academic roles, she has also presented at national and international conferences, and published over 19 articles and four book chapters on her therapeutic work.
